Treating Pain with CBD

In today’s society pain is a major problem. Outside of the common cold, low back pain (and just this specific location) is the second most common reason why people miss work.  It is staggering to think that 50% of working Americans admit to having back pain each year. With that said, people are willing to do almost anything to find something to alleviate their pain and get them out of discomfort. The prevalence of pain and the desire for a quick, easy fix continues to fuel the opioid epidemic which is tragically taking 115 lives a day due to addiction and misuse.

Within my practice, my role as an alternative medicine practitioner is find natural solutions that do not require surgery or drugs.  Now don’t get me wrong, there is a time and place for both of them, however, I feel as though unless it is an emergency, alternative options should be tried and tested first.

Over the past couple years I have done extensive research looking and trying out almost every single holistic remedy for pain, but I have never seen results like I have seen with CBD.  This natural compound is truly amazing!

CBD works by interacting with the most prevalent network of receptors in our body called the endocannabinoid system, or ECS.  The ECS is responsible for balance and harmony in our bodies and plays a vital role in a range of diverse functions including appetite, metabolism, energy balance, stress response, immune function, pain, body temperature, wake/sleep cycle, cognition, emotion, and perception.

When it comes to pain, we know that CBD is able to mimic the actions of natural brain chemicals and decrease inflammation in our body.  A 2012 study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine found that CBD significantly suppressed chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain in rodents without the effectiveness of CBD decreasing over time with continual use.

For those of you who do not understand inflammations role in pain it is important for you to know that you cannot have pain without inflammation.  Anything that can decrease inflammation therefore can decrease your body’s pain.  Given CBD is a very effective anti-inflammatory this is the first reason why it is so effective in treating pain.  The second reason is that CBD enhances your body’s own natural healing processes.

CBD is fundamentally different than most prescribed painkillers, it’s natural, not addictive, non-toxic, and has very minimal side effects.  Worse case if you take too much it will make your drowsy.
