CANNABINOIDS

Humans have been using cannabis for healing for over 4,000 years originally in Chinese medicine.  Throughout the ages different cultures from around the world independently discovered the benefits of cannabis and used it to treat a variety of issues.

By the 1800s doctors in the US and Ireland prescribed cannabis regularly, then came the backlash – not to it’s medical use but to the drug in general. This was largely due to an influx of Mexican immigrants around the time of the 1910 Mexican Revolution. The prejudices and fears people had of these poor immigrants also extended to their traditional means of intoxication: smoking marijuana. Police officers in Texas claimed that marijuana incited violent crimes, aroused a ‘lust for blood,’ and gave its users ‘superhuman strength.’ Rumors spread that Mexicans were distributing this ‘killer weed’ to unsuspecting American schoolchildren.

The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 essentially banned it nation-wide despite objections from the American Medical Association related to medical usage. Governments around the world classified cannabis the same as heroin and they sought to categorize its use as a dirty drug. This classification stalled research into its therapeutic benefits until the discovery of the endocannabinoid system in 1992, and how cannabinoids naturally interact with this system and the profound impact this has on the harmony of our body.

Consensus among the scientific community continues to grow that this ancient plant has a place in naturally treating a broad range of the health issues.

Endocannabinoid System

The most prevalent network of receptors in the human body is called the endocannabinoid system, or ECS, which is responsible for balance and harmony in our bodies. The ECS houses various cannabinoid receptors which CBD naturally interacts with that in-turn increase receptor function and flow resulting in a wide range of health benefits.

The ECS plays a vital role in a range of diverse functions including appetite, metabolism, energy balance, stress response, immune function, pain, body temperature, wake/sleep cycle, cognition, emotion, and perception.

By introducing CBD into our bodies it can help the ECS regulate balance and harmony in our bodies.

CBD

The cannabis plant is filled with hundreds of different compounds, several of which have been studied for decades for their therapeutic benefits. The cannabis compounds that has captured the most scientific interest for their healing properties in recent times is cannabidiol or CDB.

Our bodies naturally produce cannabinoids and new research shows that moms naturally produce cannabinoids in breast milk which is thought to be vital for proper infant development.

CBD has no “high” associated with it. Instead, this compound has calming, anti-anxiety, anti-psychotic and anti-inflammatory effects. CBD is now used in treatment for a broad and growing range of conditions from sleep and pain, to anxiety and inflammation, to epilepsy and MS related muscle seizures, to PTSD. CBD’s potential in reducing pain has led some experts to recommend it as an alternative to painkillers like Opioids that are tragically taking 115 lives a day in the US from addiction.

In June 2018, the US Food and Drug Administration approved the first prescription drug made from marijuana.  The active ingredient in the medication is CBD, which has been approved to treat two rare forms of childhood epilepsy.  The approval is for children aged 2 and older.

“The results from these studies provide substantial evidence of the effectiveness of CBD” the FDA said in briefing documents.
